After walking 375 steps (or is it 382?) up a winding stone staircase, you reach an observation platform in Brugge's famous bell tower, where I took this photo. I believe these huge gears run the tower's clock and carillon bells, which you can hear all over the city center. Thankfully, they didn't play while we were inside. The bell tower was built originally in 1240, and then destroyed by fire in 1280. The current tower was rebuilt in the 1400s.
