Pére Lachaise opened in 1804 and holds about 70,000 graves. It's huge! More like a very quiet, well-maintained city than a graveyard. The streets have names, and you need a map to find your way around. Many famous (and infamous) people are buried here. Among others, I visited Edith Piaf, Oscar Wilde, Jim Morrison, and the scandalized medieval lovers, Abélard and Héloise. It's a somber place, of course, but beautiful and very peaceful.
On my way back to the Metro station at Place de la Bastille, I stopped at the Indiana Tex-Mex restaurant (see “Paris, France 012”). Having never tasted Tex-Mex food in the Indiana style, I felt compelled to give it a try. I found a table outside and watched a noisy demonstration going on a few yards away. Great ambience. And the Indiana-style Tex-Mex food? I suspect that's what the demonstrators were protesting.
