The Arc de Triomphe was commissioned by Napoleon in 1806 as a monument to his military success (and ego). He never saw the finished version, though. The Arc wasn't completed until 1836, 15 years after he died. The names carved into the interior walls are those of Napoleon's favored generals and bowling partners.
