Well now, what a delightful view of Reinefjorden! The setting is peaceful, but there were plenty of thrills, action and danger involved in getting this shot. Let me tell you what happened.

We were driving back to Svolvær after visiting Reine and Å (pronounced “OH-a”), Lofoten’s southernmost town. It being Thursday, I certainly wasn’t expecting any off-road adventures in our crappy Skoda rental car. But when I spotted magnificent Reinefjorden, I compulsively jerked the wheel of our mighty two-cylinder sporty-sport teensywagon to perform a reckless, possibly ill-advised 120-degree turn onto an unmaintained dirt road that appeared to lead to the fjord. You’d have thought Starsky and/or Hutch were driving.

The Skoda’s engine roared like a puking kitten! Tires smoked! Brakes broke! Gears ground! Heads banged in unison against side windows! (Ow-ow!) Snack foods bounced around the car like sugar-coated atoms! Children screamed, “Mommy, it’s the devil car!” Our rocket on wheels weaved wildly, spitting out gravel like… gravel! There were explosions! Bazookas! Balls of fire raining from the sky! A bottle of water spilled on the floor!

Isn’t that exciting? Are you on the edge of your seat?

I suppose I may be exaggerating a bit, and for no good reason. The only scary part of our so-called off-road experience was a sickening “KA-THUNK-THUNK-THUNKA-BANG!” when I ran over a small boulder that rolled like a pig (a pig made of stone, of course) along the bottom of the car. After coming to a relatively safe stop and determining that our Skoda was mostly undamaged, I jogged off (as the rain started once again) to a small hill in the distance. That’s where I shot this lovely image.
