Västerplana (“West Flat”) kyrka is one of the five churches we visited this day, all within a few miles of each other. The oldest sections date from the 12th Century. Check out the stone floor and wooden ceiling. It’s humbling to walk into any 900-year-old structure, be it Anasazi ruins in the western US, European castles, or Scandinavian churches like Västerplana. Of all the churches we saw, I was most astounded by this one. The artwork, close quarters and heavy walls made it easy imagine Vikings (or their relatives) coming in to investigate the new religion.
